Drama fantasy Horror
Locke & Key is an American supernatural horror drama television series created by Joe Hill, based on the comic book series of the same name by Hill, that premiered on Netflix on February 7, 2020.
The series stars Darby Stanchfield, Connor Jessup, Emilia Jones, Jackson Robert Scott, Laysla De Oliveira, Petrice Jones and Griffin Gluck.
Locke & Key revolves around "three siblings who, after the gruesome murder of their father, move to their ancestral home in Massachusetts only to find the house has magical keys that give them a vast array of powers and abilities. Little do they know, a devious demon also wants the keys, and will stop at nothing to attain them
A dodgy start
This is the 3rd pilot based on the comic book series, Locke and Key, and the third attempt at an adaptation. The first pilot was shot in 2010 by Fox, but was not picked up by them, and screened at the following year's San Diego Comic Con. The second failed attempt was a movie adaptation by Universal Studios.
On the review site Rotten Tomatoes, the series has a 73% approval rating with 40 reviews, with an average rating of 6.7/10. The website's critical consensus reads, "Though Locke & Key at times struggles to strike a consistent tone, it captures enough of the essence of its source material to provide a fiendishly fun and sufficiently spooky time.
Metascore gave the series a score of 6.2 out of 10 based on 19 critics, indicating "generally favorable reviews"
IMDB Rating 7.8/10 (Ep 7.7-8.5)
Mainly positive but not universally so
This is far from perfect, yes it does drag a little at times, but it is a nice addition to the drama of this genre.
I had no knowledge of the graphic novels or what this was about, which probably helped. And early problems with other TV companies dropping out mean its journey to our screens has been dogged by problems.
It’s not quite the early season or two of “Stranger Things” and it does have a feel of a mish mash of things we’ve seen before, but overall this season is watchable, has it the legs for another good season or two, it will be interesting to find out if they commision a second season.
For me its not a drop everything, settle down and watch type of series. I can watch and check my phone etc at the same time, but it is interesting as background entertainment
MGN rating 6.5/10
