GUN THREAT: Richard Burton was threatened with a gun by Stewart Granger because of the affair he was having with Granger's wife Jean Simmons during production. The Robe was originally announced for filming by RKO in the 40's but the rights were eventually sold to Twentieth Century Fox for $100k.Richard Burton was an Atheist.Richard Burton allegedly smoked 100 cigarettes a day throughout filming.Burt Lancaster was originally cast in the role played by Victor Mature.Advertised as "The modern entertainment miracle you see without glasses!", a dig at the 3-D movies that were popular at the time.Following the release Richard Burton was accused of being a wooden film actor, a charge that would remain with him throughout his career.
