Movie Review Togo (PG)
Tuesday, 31 December 2019 | Admin
1hr 53mins Action Adventure Biopic.
The story of the sled dog, Togo, who led the 1925 serum run, but was considered by most to be too small and weak to lead such an intense race.
Director: Ericson Core
Stars: Willem Dafoe, Julianne Nicholson, Christopher Heyerdahl
Trivia: The animated film Balto 1995 told the same story but Togo was the lead sled dog for most of the journey. Balto finished the last quarter but gets most of the credit. Hence the UNTOLD true story.
Metascore (Critics) Rating 7.1/10
Screen Rant's Chris Agar rated it 7/10 and wrote:
Though Togo is headed straight for a streaming service, it's still feels like a very cinematic experience. Director Ericson Core (who also served as the movie's cinematographer), excels at portraying the brutal conditions Leonhard and his team endured during the serum run.

Stunning visuals with exceptional performance from the cast and especially the dogs. The approach of inserting flashbacks were chosen which gave a strong case for character development but sacrificed strong direction and captivating story-telling. Missed opportunities for dramatic scenes that can get the audience further into the heroic moments of Togo. Nonetheless, a strong movie with emotional moments given by a remarkable performance from Diesel and Willem Dafoe.
Stand aside Balto the real story had to be told. Not normally my favourite genre, films about animals, made up or real. But the true story element always appeals to me.
I did find the film to drag just a little at times and the flashback method of telling the tale did not quite work in my opinion and although possibly an attempt to move the story along, didn't really add anything.
A little long and perhaps not quite as uplifting as it perhaps should and could have been, but a nice afternoon watch for both dog lovers and true story fans.
