The Good Liar (15)

1h 49min Drama, Thriller.

Consummate con man Roy Courtnay has set his sights on his latest mark: the recently widowed Betty McLeish, worth millions. But this time, what should have been a simple swindle escalates into a cat-and-mouse game with the ultimate stakes.

Director: Bill Condon

Stars: Helen Mirren, Ian McKellen, Russell Tovey

Any Good?

It is not often I score higher than my fellow movie watchers and the Critics with my ratings but with this movie I have by some distance.

Yes, there are bits in the storyline that are a little far fetched and it rolls along with some big whoppers that are hard to believe and let's face it the whole thing revolves around a Con so the truth is always hard to find.

But McKellan is superb as the seemingly frail but believably nasty guy he can be and Helen Mirren is superb, although throughout you just know she's not as meek as she looks, you can literally see her mind ticking over as the film rolls on.

Ably assisted by Downton Abbeys Butler Jim Carter and the young Russell Tovey, the two main actors are a pleasure to watch.

Following on from watching one of the best Christmas films I've seen for a while "Klaus", this was one of the best Drama Thrillers I've seen in a while and up there in my top ten of 2019.

MGN Rating 8/10 IMDB Rating 6.5/10 Metascore (Critics) Rating 5.4/10
