Peterloo (2018)

The story of the 1819 Peterloo Massacre where British forces attacked a peaceful pro-democracy rally in Manchester.

Stars: Rory Kinnear, Maxine Peake, Neil Colin Bell

Unusual to see three ratings so similar but this Mike Leigh effort succeeds in doing so.

Within these ratings, there are many who loved and hated it. In searching for authenticity I feel that Mike Leigh loses something in the portrayal. For those of us who were born in Manchester and have mixed and worked with Lancashire people all our lives, it did bring a smile to the face at all the mannerisms and quotes that we are familiar with.

Sadly though I think this sad tale could have been told far better and with a bit more style. I never really invested in the characters and the final act of the massacre and the aftermath was a bit lacking and didn't really hit you like it should have done.

Possibly a subject that deserved an episodic biopic homage, but in over two and a half hours I think a better job could and should have been done to honour such a tragedy.

MGN Rating 6.5/10 IMDB Rating 6.4/10 Metascore (Critics) 6.6/10
