Mr Jones (15)
a 2019 biographical thriller film directed by Agnieszka Holland.
The film loosely tells the story of Gareth Jones, a journalist from Wales, who in 1933 travels to the Soviet Union and uncovers the truth about the Holodomor, the man-made famine in Ukraine in which millions died. His life-or-death journey inspires George Orwell's "Animal Farm"
On Rotten Tomatoes the film has a score of 78% based on 18 reviews
Metascore (Critics) Rating 6.2/10 (between 5-8/10)
Screen Dailys Jonathan Romney rated it 7 and said
With a cast impressively headed by James Norton, and cinematography that captures the bleakness of winter and deprivation to grimly palatable effect, Hollandís drama comes across in part as a meticulously mounted, sometimes solemn history lesson.

Bleak but powerful 9/10
The best movie about Holodomor so far 8/10
A good if brief dive into journalism during the early years of the Soviet union 7/10
Showcases the importance of journalism. 10/10
Perfection on Every Level 10/10
A good story, reasonably told. Some of the elements worked some didnt. The brief links to the writing of Animal Farm do not add anything to a very real very dark story.
Jones trip to Russia didnt quite get over the feel of despair it was going for. Bedraggled starving adults and children, brief glimpses of prisons never quite shocked as they perhaps should. Doctor Zhivago anyone?
The really scary thing is that almost 80 years later we can still draw paralells in the modern world.
Gareth Jones deserved for his story to be told, this perhaps just touches the surface of an interesting man and a life taken far too early.
