The final act isnít as interesting as the first two were to me. But Hirsch impresses, as usual, as a man losing his wits and Dern always gives fair value as a canny old coot who knows more than heís letting on.

Intriguing Origin Story:
Since Chronicle, there has been many sci-fi indies trying to deconstruct the superhero origin story. There are a couple of questionable choices but overall, it is a well told story. The movie could start with better misdirection. The movie needs more action for the third act. In the end, this is an intriguing origin story.
One of my most favourite Origin stories with a similar feel was "Brightburn". This offering does not obviously have the budget but like "Brightburn", has a well cast young actor taking on the "Dark" lead.
As many reviewers suggest it does run out of steam a little, but is relatively engaging for it's 95 minutes of film time and you want to know how our young hero copes.
As far as the adults Dern is always a fun watch and has you guessing as to his real intentions throughout.
Not totally original but a reasonable low budget addition to the Genre.
