The departure of the German Army from Paris in 1944.Director: René ClémentDONT MATTER IF ITS BLACK & WHITE: One of the main reasons for the movie being filmed in black and white, was the French authorities refused to allow red and black Nazi flags to fly in Paris, even for a movie. They agreed only to have black and gray flags.A French postman fell off of his bike on the Champs Elysées, when he saw extras dressed as German soldiers.Several of the French civilian vehicles are shown with cylindrical tanks on their roofs. These contained compressed natural gas and are accurate. Over sixty thousand French vehicles were converted to natural and wood gas fuel. This film was completely shot in Paris. There were one hundred eighty filming locations used within and around the city.Sadly Producer Paul Graetz did not see the completed version of the film. He died a few weeks after production finished.Kirk Douglas was paid fifty thousand dollars for one day's work playing General George S. Patton.
