Many of the Mars scenes were filmed in Wadi Rum, Jordan, a desert valley several miles long. Although previously friends Sizemore and Kilmer fell out badly on set, at one time they threw work out weights at each other. Many of their scenes were filmed over the shoulders of doubles. Away from his squabbles with his co star, Kilmer commented on the space suits, "Compared with the Batsuit, our space suits were a breeze." Some critics did say that compared to watching Kilmer as Batman, this film was a breeze.
